Registration Fee Waivers for Electric Vehicles in 2025

Several Indian states have introduced registration fee waivers or full exemptions to encourage EV adoption. These waivers significantly reduce the upfront cost of buying an EV, especially for private buyers. Below are some states where registration fee waivers or related registration-tax exemptions are in effect, and what those policies look like.

States with Full Registration and Road-Tax Waivers

Telangana announced 100% exemption from road tax and registration fees on all categories of electric vehicles (EVs) starting November 18, 2024, until December 31, 2026. This applies to two-wheelers, four-wheelers, commercial passenger vehicles, goods carriers, buses, tractors and more. Maharashtra has also included registration certificate fees and renewal charges in its 2025 EV policy. All EVs registered and sold in Maharashtra are exempt from motor vehicle tax and registration certificate fees.

Partial or Specific Waivers

Gujarat is offering a partial registration fee waiver for EVs. While not every EV in the state gets full exemption, there are concessions, especially in certain categories. Other states may offer waivers or concessions under limited conditions such as vehicle type, battery size, or whether the vehicle is private or commercial. For example, Maharashtra’s registration fee waiver is part of a broader set of incentives.

Things to Note / Eligibility & Limits

Many waivers are valid for a fixed period. Telangana’s waiver is valid through the end of 2026. Vehicle types covered often include two-wheelers, three-wheelers, light goods vehicles and buses, but some apply only to private non-commercial vehicles. Some state policies impose caps on the number of vehicles eligible for subsidies or waivers; once the cap is reached, benefits may no longer apply. Some waivers are only at purchase or initial registration; renewal costs may still apply depending on state rules.

Conclusion

Registration fee waivers are a powerful incentive making EVs much more affordable. States like Telangana and Maharashtra are offering full waivers for registration and related fees; others like Gujarat offer partial concessions. If you’re considering buying an EV, checking your state’s current EV or transport policy is essential—you could save a significant amount simply through registration fee waivers.
