In fact, in the financial year 2024-25 (FY25), China made up <strong>over 61% of all EV imports<\/strong>\u2014that\u2019s a big jump from just 23% the year before. In the last four years, Chinese EV imports have grown almost <strong>20 times<\/strong>, from just 332 cars to nearly 10,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">China Leads, Germany Follows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Until last year, <strong>Germany<\/strong> was the top country exporting EVs to India. But this year, it dropped to second place with a <strong>27.8% share<\/strong>. Even though Germany is behind China in the number of cars, it still leads in value\u2014sending <strong>$118 million worth<\/strong> of EVs out of India\u2019s <strong>$244.2 million total EV imports<\/strong>.<\/p><div class=\"evind-test-placement-from-wizard-2526266227\" id=\"evind-278600104\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-2848192826266656\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2848192826266656\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7397832578\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because German EVs are <strong>much more expensive<\/strong>. On average, a German EV costs <strong>$44,320<\/strong>, while a Chinese EV costs only <strong>$12,627<\/strong>. South Korea is also in the mix, selling <strong>647 EVs<\/strong> to India at an average price of <strong>$37,295<\/strong>.<\/p><div class=\"evind-test-placement-from-wizard-2185959172\" id=\"evind-3996684181\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-2848192826266656\"\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2848192826266656\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"7397832578\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tesla Enters the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tesla officially entered the Indian market on <strong>July 15, 2025<\/strong>, by opening its <strong>first store<\/strong>. But here\u2019s an interesting twist: <strong>Tesla is shipping its cars from Shanghai, China<\/strong>, so technically, it adds to China\u2019s numbers too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, Tesla is only offering the <strong>Model Y<\/strong> in India, which costs over <strong>$70,000 (around \u20b960 lakh)<\/strong>. That\u2019s much more than most other EVs sold here, so it\u2019s likely to stay a <strong>niche option<\/strong> for luxury buyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite all the buzz around Tesla, experts say its <strong>sales in India will be small<\/strong>, especially compared to its global sales of around <strong>2 million cars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Market of Few Players<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>India\u2019s EV import market is now very focused on just a few countries. <strong>China, Germany, and South Korea together account for 95.7% of EV imports<\/strong>, compared to 75% last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While India is seeing strong growth in EV sales, <strong>luxury EVs are still a small slice<\/strong> of the pie. In 2024, only <strong>6.6% of all EVs sold were luxury models<\/strong>\u2014that\u2019s about <strong>5,926 out of 90,354 EVs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What to Watch<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As Tesla begins operations in India, many are wondering if it can <strong>change the game<\/strong>.
